Lead dust and fumes are released into the air whenever lead paint is disturbed during maintenance, reconstruction and demolition of bridges and other steel structures. Solid lead paint waste and lead paint wash-water that are generated onsite have to be handled in a special way.

Common procedures and work practices include:

Design and construction of a containment system or enclosure that is needed to prevent both lead and other debris generated during surface preparation activities from entering the environment and to facilitate its gathering and disposal.

Removal of flaking paint via mechanical means including closed abrasive (vacuum) blasting and high-pressure water blasting in the process of abatement of bridges, tanks and other steel structures contaminated with old lead paint and lead dust.

Decontamination of lead dust via HEPA vacuum.

Transportation and disposal of soils contaminated with lead, paint flakes and dust.
